The Heritage of the Ecole Hôtelière de Genève
The history of the Ecole Hôtelière began in the 18th century, when the mansion housing our school and restaurant was a country manor house, part of the estate then known as “Le Petit Morillon”.
Adam Toepffer, former drawing teacher to Empress Josephine at the court of Napoleon I, was the first Geneva artist to faithfully render the beauty of the region’s landscapes.
His son Rodolphe, author and caricaturist, is today better known than his father. Rodolphe Töpffer is considered the inventor of the comic strip, and it may well have been here that he composed the first drawings for his albums, one of the best known being “Les Amours de Monsieur Vieux- Bois”, published in 1839.
Founded in Neuchâtel in 1914 by Gastrosuisse (21,000 members), the École des cafetiers-restaurateurs is the official training institute for the hotel and catering industry in French-speaking Switzerland.
On Saturday, August 18, 1934, the manor house (later the Ecole Hôtelière) became a restaurant under the name “Auberge du Vieux Bois”.
In 1951, the school moved to 12 avenue de la Paix in Geneva, in the mansion that once housed Rodolphe Töpffer.
In 1996, the school became the “Ecole Hôtelière de Genève”.
The first and second teaching pavilions complete the facilities, which combine the beauty and tradition of a historic building with state-of-the-art infrastructure.
In 2014, the history of the Ecole Hôtelière continues, under the aegis of Gastrosuisse, undertakes a major program of renovations and transformations to the school.
Early 2017 The terrace and garden of Vieux-Bois restaurant have been completely redesigned and renovated.
The completely transformed and renovated Pavilion 1 houses EHG’s reception and administration.
In addition, a new L’Entre’Actes restaurant, Le Bar de L’Entre’Actes, Le bureau des stages Alumni and a new parking lot have been created.
On the occasion of its 110th anniversary, the École Hôtelière de Genève is proud to announce the launch of six new postgraduate training programs designed to meet the evolving needs of various sectors.
The same year will also see the inauguration of its“discovery week” in the exciting world of hospitality, specially designed for young people aged 15 to 18.
