Interview
William Rey
Hello William,
Thank you for giving us this interview. Your journey from the Ecole Hôtelière de Genève to your current role as Principal Partner at Rey Immobilier is impressive.
Could you tell us about your experience in the hospitality industry and what attracted you to real estate?
My experience in the hospitality industry started a year before I entered school. I had the chance to work in a 4-star hotel in Geneva as a receptionist for a year. As a result, I discovered that I loved customer interaction. During my internships at EHG, I was able to refine this skill and discover other aspects that guided me towards real estate.
What excites you the most about your current job in real estate?
I think it goes beyond real estate itself. Above all, it’s a service industry, just like hospitality. Essentially, the only difference is that we don’t sell a one-night experience, but a life project. Human relationships are at the core of our job, and that’s what excites me the most.
How did your training and experience at the Ecole Hôtelière de Genève (EHG) help facilitate your transition into real estate?
First of all, I would say that the school helped me develop interpersonal skills. Manners, non-verbal communication, appearance — many things that seem secondary at the beginning of the program, but make sense when you leave school. Next, I would say that EHG provided me with solid business management skills, a crucial point when starting your own company. Finally, we all gain confidence and eloquence, which has greatly helped me in entering the real estate sector.
What has been the biggest challenge you've faced in your current role at Rey Immobilier, and how did you overcome it?
There have been many challenges, too many to list. I would say the challenge isn’t centered on a particular sale or promotion. The challenge is daily, and we must give our best every single day. Every opportunity or mandate is a challenge. Personally, that’s what motivates me every day.
Could you tell us about the most memorable internship during your training at EHG?
All three of my internships were very formative. They taught me a lot of different things, from management at the Metropole in Geneva, to interpersonal relations, to manual skills at the restaurant Tartare and Co. The last one in Brussels was very enriching as I got to discover a country I only knew from traveling, but not from working. It’s true that you truly discover a country when you live and work there. If I could give one piece of advice to future students and interns, it would be to “travel if possible.”
Could you describe the Ecole Hôtelière de Genève in three words?
Three words are too short to describe the school. I would say it’s a school of life, a school that evolves with the times, and a school that knows how to adapt.
At the recent alumni gala in January, you had the chance to taste Chef Faval’s cuisine at Restaurant Vieux Bois. What were your impressions?
The January gala was very successful. It was my first time attending, and I have good memories of it. We were able to taste incredible dishes, and the theme of the evening was in harmony with the school.
What are your future projects or ambitions at Rey Immobilier? How do you see your career evolving in real estate?
We want to maintain our family business mindset. Continue offering clients the continuous service we provide. At the same time, we are starting to expand in Switzerland, France, and the United States, offering both “off-market” and “on-market” properties, which you can find on our website.
Do you have any advice for current Ecole Hôtelière de Genève students considering a career outside of traditional hospitality?
Indeed, my path did not follow the traditional path of hospitality and catering. If I could say one thing to current and future students, it would be “do what you are most passionate about. Get up every day with a goal and ask yourself how you can achieve it.” Whether it’s in hospitality, real estate, finance, design, etc., doing what you love is the most important thing to avoid regrets.
Thank you, William, for sharing your valuable experiences and perspectives. We invite our readers to discover Rey Immobilier.
